The Pflugerville City Council approved a resolution Jan. 12 declaring the city has reached a population of more than 50,000 residents.
Based on the city planning department's annual estimate, the population of approximately 50,850 residents officially changes Pflugerville's classification from a rural community to a small urban city.

This year wasn't kind to industrial properties in the Austin area, but real estate experts in the field see reason for hope on the horizon.
According to a year-end report from NAI Austin, the city's industrial vacancies reached 22 percent  in 2009 - the highest rate recorded since the end of 1988 when vacancy reached 24 percent.  The rate was 18 percent last year.
Despite the negative numbers, there was positive news.

The Austin-Round Rock region is the most "secure" large metropolitan in the U.S., according to a ranking by Famers Insurance Group of Companies released Thursday.
The report compares, extreme weather, risk of natural disasters, housing depreciation, foreclosures, air quality, terrorist threats, environmental hazards, life expectancy and job loss data for 379 U.S. municipalities with populations of more than 500,000.

The Austin Community College District is adding more than 100 full-time positions to keep up with enrollment increases, at the same time as the school approaches the fall opening of its Round Rock campus.
ACC expects openings across the college as current facility request to transfer to the new campus.  Eventually, the ACC Round Rock campus will encompass nearly 600,000 square feet and serve 11,500 students.

The Texas A&M Health Science Center held a ribbon cutting Dec. 10 for the first building on its Round Rock campus, 30 months after receiving initial funding from the Texas Legislature.
The new 134,000-sq. ft. facility will be used for clinical teaching and includes a simulation center equipped with computer-programmed mannequins, administrative office and clinical research space for the Texas A&M Health Science Center/Scott & White Diabetes Institute.

AIT in Pflugerville to hire about 55 engineers, designers.
After adding employees earler this year, a Pflugerville company is again poised to grow.  Advanced Integration Technologies, which has been in Pfluerville since 2007 as AIT and for several years before that as Integrated Flow Systems, has grown its workforce this year from 12 to 25.  That employee growth came when AIT's California office shut down, and its Arizona and Texas offices gained workers.

Goodwill Industries of Central Texas is expanding its retail presence in Round Rock and Bastrop with two new locations.
The new Goodwill Round Rock location will occupy a 21,400-square-foot space at Highway 79, at a 20 percent increase over its former Round Rock store.  Goodwill's Bastrop location, its first in that city, spans 11,069 square feet at the intersection of FM 304 and State Highway 71.

Environmental Study Begins For Rail Connecting Round Rock, Austin, San Antonio

This month, the
Lone Star Rail District - formerly the Austin-San Antonio Commuter Rail District - announced the next steps it will make toward completing the passenger rail project, which will link Georgetown, Austin, and San Antonio.
"We are beginning to do the environmental work that is required to get federal approval for this project," said Sid Covington, chariman of the board for the Lone Star Rail District.

Round Rock city and community leaders are considering proposals to build a research center in northeast Round Rock to serve as a base for companies developing new technologies, medicines and scientific  products.
The city council voted unanimously in October to approve a resolution supporting the project - called a convergent technology center - and to request state funding.
